Our Heritage Poultry

Jacobs Farm raises heritage poultry - meaning…..all of our chickens breeds are pure breds!  A great many people ask us all the time what this means, afterall, a chicken is just a chicken, right?

No, not exactly.

There was a time long before factory farming began that all backyard flocks as well as larger farm flocks were purebred to specific breeds of chickens and other poultry and fowl.  Over time, however, to meet the demand of feeding a nation, poultry breeds were genetically modified and hybridized to provide a faster turn-around from farm to grocer to consumer.

Since 1977, The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy is one of a number of organizations who is working to preserve heritage breeds for poultry and a number of other livestock from extinction.

YES! Extinction!

Jacobs Farm raises the following breeds of Heritage Poultry:

  • Toulouse Goose (NEW! to the Farm May/June 2009!)
  • Araucana
  • Buff Orpington
  • Buff Polish
  • French Cuckoo Maran
  • Golden-laced Wyandotte
  • Jersey Black Giant
  • Jersey White Giant
  • New Hampshire Red
  • Old English
  • Patridge Rock
  • Plymouth Barred Rock
  • Sicilian Buttercup
  • Silver-laced Wyandotte
  • Single-comb Leghorn
  • Speckled Sussex
  • Sultan

We are proud to raise our flock the old fashioned way; our key ingredients? Fresh air, blue skies and room to run! Our hens are cage free and free range at their discretion all day, every day. In addition to a variety of grains and free ranging, we feed our flock a variety of vegies – but their favorite treat is spaghetti!

Check back often as we continue to update this page with more information on our heritage breeds and add more photos.  Be sure to check out the SGL blog for all the latest happenings in and around the hen house!
